JOSEPH
DUCREUX

The Original Mememaker

Painted 1793. Memed 2009. Still pointing.

He painted the memes before the internet existed—expressive self-portraits that became reaction images two centuries later.

Before memes had templates,
Ducreux had self-portraits.

Joseph Ducreux was an 18th-century French portrait painter with an eye for more than status.

Formal portraiture usually asked its subjects to sit still, look composed and leave personality at the door. His own paintings did something stranger: they pointed, mocked, yawned, shushed and performed for the viewer.

Then the internet
found him.

The paintings became meme templates for a wonderfully unnecessary translation trick: ordinary modern language, rewritten as grand pseudo-archaic prose.

Pray tell, what occurrence presently demands thy attention?

That ridiculous contrast became the joke.

Not created for the timeline.
Built to survive it.

Joseph Ducreux became a meme more than two centuries after he painted himself. No mascot brainstorm. No meme coin design meeting. No artificially manufactured origin story.

The internet simply chose him.

Reaction 03
01

A recognizable face.

One gesture. One look. Instantly Ducreux.

02

Actual internet history.

The format lived online long before the token.

03

A built-in meme format.

Modern thought. Unreasonably formal delivery.

04

Endless interpretations.

Every new timeline gives him something else to point at.

Provenance note · Cultural thesis 01

First a painting.
Then a meme. Now a coin.

The subject becomes modern. The frame remains priceless. Joseph existed first. The meme came second. The token came last.
